ROUND 1 EUROFORMULA VIDEO REPLAY

Watch the full race two replay in the first round of Euroformula. Liam Lawson received a post race penalty for the start incident while Aussies Jack Doohan gained a top 10 finish in 9th and Calan Williams finished 16th.

Liam Lawson has been given a three-second penalty for the incident at the start of the second Euroformula Open race between himself and Motopark team-mate Yuki Tsunoda, demoting him from second to fourth in the race result.

After a poor start from pole, Lawson made contact with his team-mate going down the pit straight and the two cars speared in opposite directions. Thankfully both drivers managed to keep control, but then had to go across the run-off at Turn 1. After a lengthy investigation, it was decided that Lawson was at fault for the incident, and had also breached track limits.

Teo Martín Motorsport’s Guilherme Samaia inherits second place as a result of Lawson’s penalty, his best Euroformula finish yet, with team-mate Lukas Dunner now completing the podium.

It’s the first double podium for the team since it merged with deVillota Motorsport ahead of the 2016 season, which itself hadn’t had two drivers on the podium in the same race since the 2012 season opener.

Despite the penalty costing Lawson a podium, the 17-year-old still leads the standings by three points over team-mate and race two winner Marino Sato, and has a win and a pole to his name.

“We finally got qualifying sorted today,” said Lawson. “Then I just didn’t get a good start. Simple as that. I was trying to preload [the clutch], but it wasn’t preloading. When the lights went out, nothing happened, and I had to release the clutch too quickly. I then got wheelspin and it was just a bit of a disaster.

“I was third on the first lap. I got to second, and the balance of the car was a lot more aggressive than yesterday. I didn’t expect it, so I made a mistake and lost second. Had to get that back again. I had really strong pace, the car was mega, but towards the end the tyres faded out. I was just really aggressive with them right from the start.”

Lawson’s car took damage to the floor and gearbox during the incident, while Tsunoda’s pace was restricted by damage to aerodynamic components. He finished the race in sixth.
