MERCEDES DOMINANCE & INTRATEAM DRAMA

Following a highly contentious Sprint race earlier in the day where teammate tensions boiled over, George Russell carried his winning momentum into Grand Prix qualifying. He secured pole position at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with a blistering time of 1:12.578.

His 19-year-old Mercedes teammate and championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, pushed him all the way but ultimately missed out on pole by a mere 0.068 seconds, locking out an all-Silver Arrows front row.

  • McLaren in Striking Distance: Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri line up P3 and P4 respectively. Both drivers are well within three-tenths of Russell’s time and look poised to pounce if the Mercedes drivers repeat their aggressive Sprint race antics.

  • Verstappen & Red Bull Struggle: Max Verstappen could only manage P6, over three-tenths off the pace, finding himself split on the grid by the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton (P5) and his rookie Red Bull stablemate Isack Hadjar (P7).

  • The Rookies Impress: Both Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) and Franco Colapinto (Alpine) drove excellent sessions to sneak into the final part of qualifying, securing P9 and P10.

  • Quiet Day for Perez and Alonso: Experienced veterans Sergio Perez (P20) and Fernando Alonso (P19) had difficult sessions and will start from the back rows of the grid.

Aussie, Oscar Piastri delivered a highly competitive performance during qualifying for the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix, securing a strong fourth-place starting position on the grid with a lap time of 1:12.781. The Australian driver was in excellent form all weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, executing a brilliant outside-overtake on Lewis Hamilton to claim P4 in the earlier Sprint race before matching that precise placement on the second row for Sunday’s main event. Lining up right behind his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, Piastri remains realistic about the blistering pace of the front-row Mercedes cars but is confident in his machine’s capabilities. Reflecting on the competitive landscape and the pace of the upgraded Silver Arrows, Piastri noted:

“[The car] felt pretty good. It was a bit of a messy day for everybody but the Mercedes still looks pretty strong. That is the biggest takeaway, unfortunately. We will see what we can do and how we can optimise everything.”

The Cadillac F1 Team endured a thoroughly disappointing and difficult qualifying weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The American outfit struggled heavily with single-lap pace and traction on the Montreal circuit, leaving both cars trapped at the very back of the grid.

Here is how their drivers fared in the primary Grand Prix qualifying session:

  • Sergio Perez (P20): Struggled to find a clean rhythm or extract pace from the car, setting a top time of 1:15.429 and locking himself into the final row of the grid.

  • Valtteri Bottas (P22): Had an even tougher session, finishing at the absolute bottom of the timesheets with a 1:16.272 lap time.

This rough showing mirrored their struggles from earlier in the weekend, where both drivers were also knocked out in the opening segment (SQ1) of Sprint Qualifying. They will face a massive uphill battle trying to fight forward from the back rows during the Grand Prix.

The Canadain Formula 1 Grand Prix gets underway at 4.30am AEST.
