VAN GISBERGEN WINS RACE 22 AFTER RED FLAG AT THE BEND
Shane van Gisbergen made it two-from-two with another convincing win at the OTR The Bend Supersprint, though it was a start line incident for Thomas Randle and Andre Heimgartner that stole the headlines.
Race 22 lasted barely 100 metres before the red flag was shown. Thomas Randle had qualified on the front row for the race, but failed to move away as the lights went out. Randle later mentioned that the clutch had failed. The stranded Tickford Racing Castrol sponsored Mustang sat mid track as those behind swerved late to avoid the stranded Ford. Andre Heimgartner was unsighted as he accelerated to around 150kmh and cam across the stationary car. He swerved the RJ Batteries BJR Commodore to the right, only to make hard contact with the right rear of the Mustang.
Heimgartner spun mid track in a heavy cloud of tyre smoke, while Randle was propelled towards the pit wall, making contact with the WAU Commodore of Nick Percat. Percat took a hefty hit on the driver’s door and stopped in the Turn 1 run-off area.
Medical crews rushed to Heimgartner and Randle, who eventually walked away with assistance. Heimgartner was later sent to hospital for further checks.
Waters led at the restart only to be overhauled by van Gisbergen shortly after.
From there the #97 Red Bull Ampol Racing Commodore took control. Van Gisbergen ran long and eventually returned to the track with a comfortable lead.
Waters dropped out of podium contention as Mostert and Courtney ran line astern for the entire race. Mostert finished 2nd and Courtney 3rd.
