The Australian Motor Racing Series (AMRS) has gained an experienced new leader, former Wakefield Park venue manager Matt Baragwanath returning to the Benalla Auto Club Group in the position of AMRS Series Manager.

Mr Baragwanath replaces the outgoing Keven Stoopman, and will work alongside series administrator Prue Payne for the final three rounds of the 2019 AMRS, while also overseeing calendar and event planning for the 2020 series.

A familiar face in the motor racing community, Mr Baragwanath managed the BAC-owned Wakefield Park circuit from October 2015 until August 2018, and has worked in other motorsport roles including venue operations at Sandown Raceway, and management of on-track activities for the Grand Prix Corporation, encompassing both the Australian Formula 1 and Motorcycle Grand Prix events.

Mr Baragwanath said he is excited about reconnecting with the type of passionate competitors who attend AMRS events.

“I’m really looking forward to reinvigorating my relationships with competitors and categories I got to know during my time at Sandown and Wakefield Park,” Mr Baragwanath said.

“The AMRS provides an opportunity for drivers to experience the professionalism of national-level motorsport at an affordable price point, and the best thing is the variety of categories.

“We have everything from some of the most talented up-and-coming young guns showcasing their talents in the Australian Formula Ford and Formula 3 Championships, all the way up to recreational racers enjoying their exotic machines in GT-1 Australia.

“Then there are affordable categories like the Mazda RX8 Cup, Thundersports and Miniature Race Cars, which have rapidly grown in popularity over the last couple of seasons; there really is something for everyone.

“I look forward to working with all these categories, and planning our calendar for 2020.”

BAC Group CEO Chris Lewis-Williams said Mr Baragwanath’s proven event management experience made him an ideal candidate for the AMRS role.

“The AMRS management position presented an ideal opportunity for Matt to come back into the BAC Group, and we know from his time at Wakefield Park that he’s very capable of running events, and dealing with categories and competitors,” Mr Lewis-Williams said.

“The Australian motorsport landscape has changed significantly in 2019, with the investments being made in some specific national categories, but we remain committed to ensuring the AMRS continues to grow and succeed.

“We know the AMRS has a valid place in the market – it provides an environment for competitors and categories that were previously confined to state or club-level events, to travel to different circuits and race on the national stage.”

Round 4 of the 2019 AMRS will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park on 27-29 September.
