KYLE EVANS SPENDS THE WEEKEND SUPER-SPRINTING AT MORGAN PARK

Young Queensland Racing Driver & Half Price Parts Velocity Media Driver Kyle Evans spent last weekend getting some valuable seat time in his Hyundai Excel.  Entered in the Juniors category he took part in the Series B Super Sprints at Morgan Park Raceway.

The Super Sprint events at the Darling Downs circuit give drivers a change to pit themselves, well against themselves, the Super Sprints are a race against the clock to set your best time possible, as well as against other drivers in the same category, and even those in the same race groups.

Six to eight cars go out in each group for a 3 lap race (time trial), starting two by two with approximately 10-15 seconds between rows.  Its a great way to improve your driving, learn the track (they run different iterations during the year at Morgan Park), work on your standing starts and a good weekend racing, with some socialising too.

There were around 110 entries for the event, and Evans ran in the juniors of which there was only two this time round, and he was the quickest.

“Awesome weekend put on by the Warwick District Sporting Car Club at Morgan Park Raceway.  The Sprint Series was held on the Circuit D – 1.5km circuit.  At this race meet there were approx. 110 competitors.  The categories ranged from 0cc – 1500cc to the 5000cc-over from sports cars to open wheelers.  I ran in the 0-1500cc Junior Class in my black 1.5 ltr Hyundai Excel. ” Evans told Velocity after the event.

“This weekend was a good opportunity to fine tune the car and find out what can be improved.  Over the weekend we found some electrical problems with the car, we also learnt more about the suspension.  I won the Junior Class (ha ha only two of us) but I also would have won the 0-1600 class if I was entered into it based upon my times.  Overall I sat in 44th position out of 110 competitors entered. “

As a young learning driver (who has just come off his CAMS “P’s”) a Super Sprint weekend like this is a great way for a young driver to learn race craft, from the standing starts through to passing and the best race lines.  Events likes this at Warwick have drivers from all sorts of backgrounds, including many that have been racing for years and are happy to help the young ones out.  Ambitious drivers like Kyle can learn valuable lessons at track days and Super Sprints. They’ll learn respect for their car, their driving skills will be enhanced and they also earn respect from other drivers.  And you get a lot of track time.

“This weekend would not have happened without the support from Troy Perrins from TPS Suspension for all his help and for sorting out my super shocks to make the car drive perfectly.  I would also like to thank Troy for all the support you have given me for this I can not thank you enough.  I finished every single session successfully. ” said Evans.

The next Event for the Warwick District Sporting Car Club – Qld Super Sprint Series – B Series will be Round 3 – 2-4 August 2019 at Morgan Park Raceway.   Kyle’s next CAMS event will be 28-30 June 2019 – The Queensland State Motor Racing Championship @ Morgan Park Raceway.
