SHANE VAN GISBERGEN AT THE JACK LINK’S 500 NASCAR RESULT

Shane van Gisbergen’s performance at Talladega today was a masterclass in NASCAR superspeedway adaptation, though the final results sheet doesn’t quite tell the full story of his competitive run. Despite showing front-running pace throughout the afternoon, SVG was ultimately caught in the late-race chaos synonymous with “The Big One.”

Van Gisbergen looked like a seasoned veteran in the draft from the green flag. He spent much of the first half of the race inside the top 10, frequently dicing for the lead. His ability to manage the air and work the lines allowed him to lead laps and exchange positions with the likes of Chris Buescher and eventual winner Carson Hocevar.

On Lap 115, the race saw its first major shakeup. A 26-car pileup was triggered at the end of the backstretch. SVG was caught in the melee, sustaining damage to his No. 97 Chevrolet. However, his crew did an exceptional job keeping him on the lead lap and making necessary repairs to keep the car aerodynamically viable.

In an impressive display of resilience, van Gisbergen fought his way back into the top 10 following the Lap 115 restart. With just a few laps to go, he was running in 9th place and looked poised for a career-best Cup finish on a superspeedway.

Unfortunately, during the three-lap dash to the finish, chaos struck again. Contact involving Austin Dillon, Christopher Bell, and Ryan Preece collected van Gisbergen as the field roared toward the checkers. The damage relegated him to a 20th-place finish, a frustrating result given he had run in the lead pack for the vast majority of the 500 miles.

While a 20th-place finish isn’t the trophy SVG wanted, his performance proved he has fully conquered the learning curve of pack racing. He was a genuine contender for the win, demonstrating aggressive yet calculated moves that kept him in the hunt until the final mile.

“Had a decent No. 97 WeatherTech Chevrolet today. I was trying to learn the new stages and run good all day. It worked up until the end when we were involved in a decent crash coming to the checkered. Overall, a good day. Definitely, some good things to take out of it and learn from. A shame our finish couldn’t show for it. Onto Texas next weekend, said SVG.”

FROM TRACKHOUSE:

  • Van Gisbergen started the 188-lap race, 33rd but quickly broke into the top-20 by lap 33. Van Gisbergen entered the top-10 on lap 42 and was able to maintain position until the No. 97 team opted to pit a few laps later. Van Gisbergen and team opted to run the first stage long with a select few cars and pitted with 11 laps to go and finished the stage 17th. Van Gisbergen started the second stage 16th, and on lap 116 a multicar incident occurred giving the No. 97 Chevrolet minimal damage. The No. 97 team made repairs, and van Gisbergen went on to finish Stage 2, 11th. In the final stage, van Gisbergen battled for position and ran in the top-12 majority of the stage. Van Gisbergen looked ready to post a top-10 finish before being involved in an accident coming to the checkered flag. He was credited with a 20th-place finish.
