2022 Australian Formula 3 Champion, Noah Sands, has made a bold announcement stating his intentions for a 2024 Australian Hyper Racer Championship Campaign.

Amongst other key drivers, some of whom are yet to be announced, the move signifies a growing attraction to the latest and greatest open-wheeler racing series in Australia. The announcement comes just weeks after it was released that S5000, the country’s previous premiere open wheeler category, appears to be dead in the water.

Sands led a successful karting career achieving victories in club, state and national karting championships before finishing runner up in his rookie season of Formula Ford in 2021. The young driver moved quickly on to the Formula 3 Championship the following year and was subsequently crowned F3 champion in his rookie season.

In 2023, while working to line up opportunities for a Super 2 drive, Sands competed in the fifth round of the Australian Hyper Racer Championship as a guest driver and was immediately sold on both the product and the series. “Compared to Formula Ford, F3 and even S5000, these have got heaps more downforce”, said Sands. “There’s some similarities between this and my F3 car, but [Hyper Racer X1’s] are in a league of their own with the weight. The downforce is incredible”.

Approaching the weekend with zero preparation, Noah finished 4th overall taking a race or two to adjust to the car and suffering a spin thanks to an oil spill from the Super Trucks in a previous session. However, by the final race he had familiarised himself with the car showing his true pace coming from 10th on the starting grid to catch the race leader by lap 5, crossing the finish line side by side after an intense wheel to wheel battle for the remainder of the race.

The standout part of the whole weekend for Noah? The price.

“The cost versus performance is incredible, incomparable to anything else I have ever driven.” Said Sands. “You can run a full season for less than a quarter of the price of other categories”.

Sands will be running a leased car for the 2024 season, having placed an order for a car of his own to be built for the 2025 season. From 2025 onwards, Noah plans to race in the Hyper Racer Championship permanently while continuing to chase his Super 2 ambitions, primarily thanks to the low running cost of the X1 allowing him to retain the majority of his racing budget for his supercars campaign. “It’s cheaper than Go Karting!” he exclaimed.

The 2024 Australian Hyper Racer Championship will be hosted by the Victorian Motor Racing Championship (VMRC) under the AASA, with multiple rounds at both Calder Park Raceway and Winton Motor Raceway, a circuit Sands knows well, currently the outright lap record holder for the track in his Dallara Formula 3 car.
