AASA SHORT TRACK NATIONALS ROUND 2 PREVIEW

The second round of the inaugural Hi-Tec Oils AASA Short Track Nationals powered by WOLF SPORTS will take place this weekend, June 20-21 at One Raceway.

The two-day race meeting is headlined by national one-make series Formula RX8, an incredibly popular category powered by rotary motors.

Although the Yellow Express Formula RX8 nationals is the main act, it will be joined by a flurry of national categories, TFH Hire Legend Cars Australia, Hankook Australian Drivers’ Championship, Stock Cars Australia and AASA Tin Tops.

TFH Hire Legend Cars Australia was the main act at the opening round of the Hi-Tec Oils Short Track Nationals, the highly entertaining pint-sized machines boast a large grid with many of the usual front runners in attendance.

After a couple of months off, the Aussie built Hyper Racer X1s will hit the track as the Hankook Australian Drivers’ Championship.

The Suzuki powered ground-force machines are very well suited to One Raceway, former champion Dean Crooke and championship leader Bradley Smith will be joined front-runners Harry Strik, Lucas Stasi and Zac Catlin.

Former international karter Kalen Chin will make his debut in the series and will likely be one to watch for.

Stock Cars Australia is a grid which features big engined racing cars including ex-NASCARs and AUSCARs, TA2 cars and much more. This category itself is worth making the trip to One Raceway for.

As they did in Round 1, the Stock Cars will share the track with the all-encompassing AASA Tin Tops, open to any kind of Tin Top machine.

As with all AASA Short Track Nationals events, the schedule is run to a condensed two-day format.

On Saturday morning every category has a practice session and a qualifying session before racing commences in the afternoon.

In total Formula RX8 has seven races across the course of the weekend, as well as an additional Shootout and warm up session on Sunday morning.

For the RX8s, Saturday is made up with heat races, before the three-part final occurs on Sunday. For more information on the unique Yellow Express Formula RX8 Nationals format, click here.

Over 20 RX8s are entered, and includes a couple of notable national racing drivers.

There will be a real draw for rotary fans, with an RX8 theme across the weekend. Many clubs have been invited to bring there RX8s to the venue as part of the festivities.

The remaining categories get five races each across the two days, two on Saturday and three on Sunday.

During the lunchbreak on Saturday there will be a track day session of an hour from 12pm-1pm in which fans can cut laps in their road car around the One Raceway venue.

This is neatly coupled with the Cars and Coffee event, which has partnered with RX8upgrades.com.au.

This will be held next to the out grid and take place from 10am-12pm on both days of the event. There will be a coffee van on site, allowing people to meet up and just chat about their passion.
