Australia’s first all-Indigenous race team, Racing Together has launched its new headquarters at Queensland Raceway on Saturday.

The team, created in late-2020 by internationally-acclaimed motorsport official Garry Connelly and his wife Monique, facilitates and encourages the involvement of young First Nations Australians in motorsport and empowers them to find employment in the sport including mechanical, engineering and driving roles.

Since its inception, Racing Together has been based at Norwell Motorplex on the Gold Coast, where it has built, prepared and campaigned Hyundai Excel race cars for the competitive Queensland and Northern Territory Excel Racing categories.

Due to the popularity and success of the program, larger facilities were required and thanks to the support of Queensland Raceway owner Tony Quinn, Racing Australia has been able to relocate to a base on-site at the Willowbank circuit.

“Tony Quinn has been an amazing supporter of Racing Together and thanks to his generosity, we have been able to move into larger facilities than where we were previously,” Connelly said.

“Having a dedicated space to be able to run Racing Together will enable us to take the program to the next level, and provide an environment for our inductees that fully represents a race team working environment.”

While Racing Together will no longer be based at Norwell, Connelly said Paul Morris will continue to be involved.

“A big thank you to Paul Morris and the crew at Norwell for accommodating us since we started a few years ago, and Paul will still be helping with driver training and mentoring the program participants,” he said.

“When we launched in 2020, there was virtually no indigenous participation in motorsport, so we’re proud we’ve been able to encourage first nations Australians to become involved in the sport, and four of the inductees from our original intake have already found employment within the sport.”

In 2023, Racing Together will run at least three Hyundai Excels in state championship rounds, with Braedyn Cidoni and Karlai Warner confirmed as drivers.

Saturday’s launch of the new facilities was attended by dignitaries including Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Newman MP, Assistant Minister for Hydrogen Development Lance MacCallum MP and Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser.
