REYNOLDS: TEXAS WILL TEST SUPERCARS’ BEST

The Supercars All Star eSeries may be at the half-way mark, but the front runners will be tested early when the field heads to the Circuit of the Americas tonight, says Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds.

Reynolds is one of 13 drivers in this week’s field who raced in the Austin 400 when the Supercars visited Texas in 2013, and distinctly remembers the iconic first corner with an intimidating 133-foot hill being particularly difficult to manoeuvre.

“The first bit of the race you go uphill quite substantially and quite fast into a hairpin turn,” Reynolds said.

“The apex of the corner is quite blind until you are right at the top of the hill. So, when you get there it’s like there is this big wall in front of you as you are climbing it. It’s an unusual turn and I think a lot of the guys will find that out.

“My memories of the track are that it was difficult. There were a lot of tight corners that didn’t flow that well. I think our cars love street tracks and this isn’t a street track, even though it has some slow corners and some fast ones. There is a triple right hander out the back that the car really does not like, but then there’s the infield with the short sharp stuff which the car doesn’t mind.

“It will certainly test the front runners in the field, and I think it will be a cool race for the fans to watch.”

Reynolds enjoyed Texas when he competed there seven years ago. but the track didn’t reciprocate. He finished 11th, 11th, 16th and 13th in the four races over the event.

“I remember I had something wrong with my car and that’s what made it difficult for me. There was a problem with the whole braking system that we didn’t work out until after that round. If I recall correctly, I qualified second last in practically every race, they were probably the worst qualifying records of my life. I don’t know if it will get much better for me in the virtual world there, but I have been practising a lot.”

Round 6 of the All Stars eSeries will be raced on the west configuration of the circuit which is the same layout as what the Supercars Championship ran in 2013 for the Austin 400.

31 drivers will line up to make the biggest field in the eSeries to date, and like last week, the program will feature a Top Ten Shootout, two short races – one a reverse grid – and a longer feature race to finish.

Qualifying will be broadcast exclusively on Fox Sports tonight from 6pm AEST, with the races broadcast live from 7pm on Fox Sports, Kayo, 10 Play, Sky Sports (NZ) and Facebook.
