TYLER EVERINGHAM CLAIMS FIRST WIN IN DUNLOP SUPER2 SERIES

HALF PRICE PARTS Velocity Magazine Media Driver Tyler Everingham claimed his first win in the Dunlop Super 2 Series on a cold, wet and windy and windy day at Sandown Raceway.

The 18 year old from Dubbo in regional NSW, an area not usually associated for wet conditions, showed maturity beyond his years in his decision to start the race on wet tyres. As series leader Bryce Fullwood and Penrite Racing co-driver Will Brown peeled into the pits to change from slick tyres during a Safety Car intervention, Everingham moved into second.

At the re-start Tyler looked to regain lost heat in his wet tyres and then his move for the lead on Sandown’s front straight. He etched out a narrow gap to the rest of the field, which he maintained for the rest of the race.

He came under late pressure from a charging Jack Smith, but Tyler Everingham maintained his compute, safe in the knowledge that Smith had a post race time penalty. Tyler managed to keep Smith at bay in any case to take his first win of the 2019 Super 2 Season.

It was a pretty dicey call, youve got to think further ahead into the race, Tyler Everingham explained. I went with wets because, at the end of the day, I thought that it was the better decision. Im pretty sure that the first four cars stayed on slicks and the seemed to have pretty good pace, but then the rain came and a Safety Car was declared after a few cars went off. Thats really what got us the race win.

When Tyler saw both Fullwood and Brown head for the pits, he knew that a win was a distance possibility.

It was so cool, I thought that luck was on my side this time after wed made the right call. Thats the motorsport game, youve got to make split second decisions and stick with them. I havent really had that much wet weather experience in race cars, but I just seem to really like it and enjoyed every second of it. I definitely wouldnt say that I am a smooth driver, I think that you need to be a bit radical in the wet to be honest. Just put everything on the line and reap the best reward.

As Jack Smith edged closer in the final laps, Tyler was fully aware of the situation and of Smith’s impending penalty.

The team informed me that Jack Smith had a time penalty, so he wasnt too much of a threat. If he tried a challenge I probably would have put up a bit of a fight, but not to the point that it would compromise my position.

It was amazing to cross the finish line with no other cars in front of me, it was a clear view and a really cool feeling.

The additional support from RJ batteries has helped Tyler financially over the past two rounds and the time behind the wheel has seen Everingham continue his climb towards the top of the field.

“I’m getting more use to the car and everything is starting to come to me as I feel more comfortable, you’ve got a lot more time now to jump between cars,” Tyler said. “We just need to find a little bit more in the dry.”
