TICKFORD REPORT DAVISONS TO START P4 AT SANDOWN 500

Brothers Will and Alex Davison (No. 23 Milwaukee Racing Ford Mustang) will start fourth for Sunday’s Sandown 500, after the former finished fourth in Race 29 on Saturday afternoon, the highest of the Ford Mustangs.

After Thomas Randle climbed from 11^th to fifth in the co-driver-only Race 28 earlier on Saturday, Lee Holdsworth (No. 5 The Bottle-O Ford Mustang) finished P7 in Race 29 to qualify seventh for Sunday’s race.

James Moffat and Chaz Mostert’s (No. 55 Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang) day appeared to be derailed in Race 28, when Moffat lost control at the exit of Turn 1 on a wet track and collided with Randle, damaging the Supercheap Auto Mustang. However after starting Race 29 from 25^th, Mostert climbed tremendously through the field in wet conditions to take ninth at the flag.

The fortunes of Michael Caruso and Cameron Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) were the opposite of Moffat and Mostert’s, however. After Waters struggled to 15^th in group qualifying, Caruso charged through the field to eighth in Race 28. The call to start Race 29 on slick tyres, however proved the wrong choice as Waters fought the wet race track and dropped to 14^th at the chequered flag, just as a dry line had finally formed.

Supercars action on Sunday at Sandown begins at 10:00 a.m. AEDT with a 20-minute warm up session, followed by the 161-lap Sandown 500 starting at 1:25 p.m.

“Our car was really strong for half the race, but once the track started drying out a little bit I think we were a little bit over-pressured on our tyres, and we fell off the cliff, basically. Anyway, I brought it home P7, and that’s not a bad starting spot for the 500.”

Thomas Randle
“I was really happy with the co-driver race. We started a bit further back than we probably should have there, but we had a great race. I moved up six positions to finish fifth, unfortunately there was that intra-team contact with Moff, which is a bit of a shame, but our car was really strong, and I think we can have a solid run in the 500 tomorrow.”

Cameron Waters
“Obviously a really disappointing day for us, I qualified 15^th when we were on for much better in quali and I just ran into slick track at the end of the lap. Carus did a mega job again to get us up to P8 in his race, and we just made the wrong call on tyres in my race to stay on slicks. The cruel part is the tyres finally came in right at the end and we set the fastest lap of the race on the last lap. We made our work a fair bit harder for tomorrow, but we’ve got a quick car so we’ll see what we can do with it.”

Michael Caruso
“It was a good race for us, at least my race. Starting 15^th was obviously always going to be hard given we were in the middle of the pack, but great to make up seven spots and get up to P8, and hand over the car nice and clean to Cam. Unfortunately our tyre call for Cam’s race didn’t go to plan. If the race had started 20 minutes later we probably would have been sitting pretty, but it’s what it is, the car’s pretty strong, so we’ll give it a crack tomorrow.”

Chaz Mostert
“Tough day for 55, we’ve been chasing balance with the car most of the weekend, but then had a big swing for practice and quali, and I think we made some inroads. The conditions were tricky all day, got to seventh in quali, J-Moff went out for his race, and unfortunately got taken out, but it’s not really anyone’s fault, racing happens. My race was a whole lot of fun, started last, you can’t go any further backward no matter what you do. I tried to start the car like my Civic at home, at the lights I got off the line, picked up a couple and just had a lot of fun getting back to ninth.”

James Moffat
“Obviously a pretty disappointing result for us, getting caught up in what happened at Turn 1. It was pretty unfortunate that meant we couldn’t finish the race, up to that point it was going okay for us. I was just trying to look after the car as best I could, I felt we were in a pretty reasonable position, and the way the conditions were with a fair bit of rain falling on the track. There was quite a bit of slipping and sliding happening, and yeah unfortunately the contact with Tom put us out of the race. It’s really frustrating, but that’s motor racing. Chaz did a ripper job to get us back up there, and we’ll give it our best tomorrow for the 500.”

Will Davison
“Tricky conditions today, obviously, but certainly happy to start the big race fourth tomorrow. That’s really the ultimate aim today, is to get a good grid spot for tomorrow. We’ve still got a few unknowns with our car balance in the dry, we’ve had very limited running, but obviously we’re happy to have escaped the day with minimal damage, and I had a really good race in those mixed conditions. I wouldn’t mind it being wet tomorrow, we were quite quick in the wet, but I think we’ll be okay in the dry and we’ve got a good starting spot.”

Alex Davison
“That was a tricky race, obviously on slicks in the wet weather in the middle of the race was quite difficult. I was a bit disappointed in myself, I ran off the road in the last two corners once and lost a couple spots, and struggled for pace on the slippery track. Once the track dried a bit everything felt fine, but just disappointed to lose a couple spots, but it could have been much worse. As always, you need to be a bit conservative in those races, it’s all about setting the grid for Sunday, so I more or less achieved that, but eyes are all on the 500 tomorrow.”

“The day could have been better, but could have been much worse. All things considered the cars ended the day pretty much straight, which in those conditions is pretty tricky. Of course we wanted to finish a bit higher up, but it’s tomorrow that counts and we’ve got three cars reasonably placed, and Cam and Michael are quick from the mid pack. It’s a long race tomorrow so we’ll see how we go.”
