CLEAN SWEEP FOR OSCAR PIASTRI AT SILVERSTONE

Australian teenager Oscar Piastri produced a superb performance at Silverstone for rounds three and four of the Formula Renault Eurocup season as he took two wins and both pole positions in his R-ace GP FR-19 machine.
 
Oscar, who currently studies in the United Kingdom, dug deep at his ‘local’ race circuit and pulled off remarkable back-to-back wins – the first person to do so this season – despite tough competition from team-mate Alex Smolyar on both days.
 
Getting off the line well for the first 30-minute contest on Saturday, the BRDC Rising Star had to fend off a quick-starting Smolyar and the pair went side-by-side for most of the opening lap-and-a-half before Oscar made the mature decision to slot in to P2 rather than risk an incident.
 
Keeping the pressure on his colleague paid off however, as the Russian ran wide on lap five and retired the next time around, leaving Oscar with a clear run to the flag, where he recorded a dominant 12 second victory.
 
Things were even smoother on Sunday as Oscar held the lead at the start of the race and slowly extended his advantage to Smolyar throughout, stamping his authority on the championship as he moved to the top of the standings.

“I’m happy to get another two wins as my last race victory was here at Silverstone. R-ace GP has done a really good job – Alex and I have been quick all weekend and it was looking like a one-two in race one before he broke down, but we managed to get it on Sunday,” said Piastri
 
“The first lap battle on Saturday was pretty intense. We’re part of the same team but also racers who want to beat each other. We gave each other good racing room – it was a good hard battle. It would have been nice to have come out on top of but staying on track gave me the victory. I knew if we kept fighting then everyone behind would stay with us so after the first lap I didn’t want to push too hard. Once I had the lead it was just a case of keeping things going to get the win.”
 
“Sunday’s qualifying was the best session I have ever had; I don’t think I’ve had a pole position by so much. The race was a bit easier going: I thought Alex was going to be strong and for the first few laps he was keeping me honest, but the gap was gradually increasing, and I just maintained it from there. It’s been a pretty faultless day and it is great to do this as it is Mother’s Day back in Australia so it’s a win for my Mum.”

Next up for the Formula Renault Eurocup competitors is a tough visit to the streets of Monte Carlo, in support of the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix over the weekend of May 23.
