HUNTER MCELREA USF2000 INDY TESTING SUCCESS

Young Kiwi racer Hunter McElrea was the quickest USF2000 driver during both days of the recent Chris Griffis Memorial Test drive at Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.  McElrea is the current Australian Formula Ford points leader.

He returned to the United States for his 2nd test drive  with the Pabst Racing outfit after a run at the same circuit in 2017 .  Hunter’s fastest lap, a 1:24.5064s was in the fourth session, and saw him unofficially brake the USF2000 Indianapolis road course track record, he was quickest in 3 of the 6 sessions.

“This past week I have been lucky enough to have spent the week in USA, testing a USF-2000 car with Pabst Racing, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for the official Chris Griffis Memorial test. I was able to top both days of the test, and most importantly overall, topping 3 out of the 6 sessions, and finishing P2 in the others. I was also able to unofficially break the track record twice, lowering my own record on the 2nd day!  It was such an amazing experience to be driving these awesome cars at such an iconic track” said McElrea

Hunter told Velocity Magazine “It was an amazing experience to drive these amazing cars around such an iconic circuit! I am really thrilled to end P1 overall, and I have to thank my supporters who made it possible for me, as well as Pabst Racing for a really good car”.

We then asked Andy McElrea, Hunters dad and owner of McElrea Racing based at the Gold Coast his take on Hunters weekend in the States, “It was a fairly intense couple of days with all the Indy Lights & Pro Mazda teams there also. I was pleased to see how quickly he clicked back in to the wings and slicks technique. The team was very happy with his performance, so if he earns a ticket to the Road to Indy Shootout and does well there, Pabst Racing would love to run him in the 2019 USF2000 championship. He has been living in Melbourne on his own this year, so if everything fell in to place, it wouldn’t be too much of a culture shock to move over there on his own. It seems that being born over there may be a big help in regards to visas and immigration. Either way, he needs to wrap up the Australian Formula Ford championship and get to the shootout before any of the other cool stuff can happen for him!”
