The decisive moment of the race came on Lap 54 when Waters and Davison slipped past Mostert at Turn 1. He skipped away to a 1.2 second lead before the second and third-paced drivers made their final stops, choosing to run a 32 lap final stint. Randle then stopped a lap later to emerge just behind the #25 Mustang.

Waters ran to Lap 60 before his final stop and returned to the circuit in an effective fifth place, behind Mostert, Randle, Davison and Le Brocq.

He made short work of Le Brocq and then slid the #6 Monster Energy Mustang inside Davison for third at the final corner on Lap 71.

Mostert by then sat  2.8 second further up the road, though his mirrors were filled with the red and green hues of Randle’s Mustang. It was the perfect team game from Randle, who forced the #25 into a defensive mindset.

That allowed Waters to close on the pair. He then despatched of his teammate with minimal disruption on Lap 79 and set his sights on the leader.

Waters sat glued to the tail of the Optus Mobil 1 Mustang and dived down the inside line into Turn 2 on Lap 71. Mostert had begun to turn towards the apex of the corner, but opened the steering wheel at the last moment to avoid contact with the black Mustang.

Mostert clung to the tail of the Monster Energy Mustang for another lap or so before Waters was able to edge away to a one-second advantage.

Randle had held third but dropped to fifth as the chequered flag waved.

Will Brown had conducted a master class in recovery driving, taking the final place on the podium after starting the race from 13th on the grid and then dropping to

As the race got underway it was Waters who managed to lead the field into Turn 2 with Mostert just on his outside. Davison and Randle were next in a congested pack of cars. That congestion led to contact between Percat, De Pasquale and Kostecki on the run towards Turn 3, with the Erebus Motorsport TFH Hire Services Camaro nudged sideways into the barriers.

Kostecki and De Pasquale dropped to the back of the field and stopped at the end of the lap with punctured tyres and damaged suspension. Percat also lost ground, while Jaxon Evans found himself facing the wrong way at the exit of Turn 3.

De Pasquale was sent straight into the garage for lengthy repairs, where the Shell V-Power Mustang eventually spent the remainder of the race.

The order at the head of the field remained static until Mostert made his first stop on Lap 25. Waters stopped four laps later and was then passed for the effective lead by Mostert  as he rejoined the circuit.

Mostert retained the lead throughout the middle stages of the race until Davison and Waters made their move on Lap 54.

Matt Payne finished fourth behind Waters, Mostert and Brown, with LeBrcoq in sixth. Feeney, Davison, Heimgartner and Hill completed the Top 10.

“That was an awesome race,” Waters told Fox Sports.

“I had so many cool battles during the course of the race. Chaz was really fast at the start, but we had a bit at the end. We had some epic battles out there and it was a lot of fun. The car was amazing on tyres and a massive thank you to all the boys and girls at Tickford.”

“I loved the conditions like that (at the end). So as soon as it rained I said ‘Bring it on!”

Third place for Will Brown has seen the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver finish on the podium in twelve of the thirteen races thus far in season 2024. It is those kind of statistics that mark a future champion.

“I was pretty nervous after qualifying to be honest,” Brown said to Fox Sports.

“We were slowly picking them off one-by-one and I thought that we might get in the top five, but then we were in the top 3. Randle and I had a pretty good fight, but that slowed my progression. That got my tyres hot and I couldn’t get to them (Mostert and Waters).”
