Jeff Morton has become the fastest-ever driver of a production car around the world-famous Mount Panorama circuit, setting a blistering 2:15.8100 in a SuperSprint session at Challenge Bathurst this morning.
Morton’s time, achieved in his GWR Australia-prepared Porsche 911 GT2 RS, eclipsed the previous record of 2:16.5 set by Bernd Schneider in 2017.
The tarmac rally ace was ecstatic with the lap record, but believes there is even more time to be found.
“I lost some time when I was baulked by a slower car in the last corner, so there is definitely more in it,” Morton said.
“However, I’m extremely happy; the time came pretty easily in the end.
“We put a new set of Goodyear Supersport RS tyres on, and they gave me enormous confidence, especially under brakes.
“The car feels amazing; the handling across the top of the Mountain is awesome and the acceleration out of the corners is phenomenal.”
While elated to claim the lap record, Morton has the opportunity to lower the benchmark further, with three more sessions scheduled for today.
“It’s good the record is out of the way, it means the pressure is off, but I’d still like to go faster!” he said.
“It will all depend on the track conditions; yesterday, we saw the track became slower throughout the day as the temperature increased.
“My fastest speed on Con-rod Straight so far has been 299.2km/h, so my other goal for today is to break through the 300km/h barrier!” Morton concluded.
