THE NEW NORM: QUALIFYING RESULTS FOR R11 AND R12
The grid for races 11 and 12 of the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercar Championship have taken on a very different complexion as tyre strategies have come into play.
The limited supply of hard and soft compound tyres have given teams the option of managing tyre life to maximise results across the course of the weekend, or go for broke and target a better result in a single race with an inevitable sacrifice in the other races.
Having exclusively used the harder tyre on Saturday, Kelly Racing had two sets of new soft compound tyres at they disposal for Sunday. Andre Heimgartner used the new rubber to good effect to claim 4th place for race 11 and pole position in race 12, his first pole in the Virgin Australia Supercar Championship.
“Really happy today with how we went in qualifying, we obviously held back yesterday just running the hard tyres. We tuned the NED Mustang up overnight and it came out lightning fast in qualifying on the green soft tyres,” Heimgartner reported to Kelly Racing media sources.
“It really gives myself and the whole team confidence that we can get those good results after everything we’ve dealt with this year. It’s good motivation for myself and the guys that have left their families back in Melbourne to be on the road with the team. Hopefully now we can have a good race and stay where we are and get a good result for the whole team.”
Scott McLaughlin took pole for race 11 from Shane vanGisbergen, Nick Percat and Heimgartner. Fabian Coulthard, Chaz Mostert, Garry Jacobson, Rick Kelly, Cameron Waters and Mark Winterbottom completed the top 10. Jamie Whincup finished in 19th place.
Andre Heimgartner topped qualifying for race 12 from Whincup and McLaughlin. Winterbottom, Reynolds, Percat, LeBrocq, Mostert, Waters, with Rick Kelly 10th. Shane vanGisbergen could only manage to record the 22nd fastest time for the session.
