Tim Brook has sealed victory in the 2018 Toyota 86 Racing Series in sensational style on the streets of Newcastle. Brook fended off a strong challenge from Luke King over the course of the weekend, shadowing his title rival to the flag in the opening race.
He then stayed out of trouble in the second race to finish second on Sunday morning before rocketing off the line to lead the final race.
With the championship on the line, Brook wisely opted not to fight when challenged by Liam McAdam to again finish second, this time ahead of Bathurst 1000 winner Luke Youlden.
The result proved enough to hand Brook the 2018 championship.
“This is absolutely incredible,” beamed Brook after the race. “We came into the weekend not treating it any differently, knowing we needed to stay out of trouble. “It’s a shame Luke got caught out in Race 2, it would have been great to go wheel to wheel with him for the title like we did in the first race, but we did what we needed to do.
“Last year we came so close but got caught up in a crash at Bathurst that ended our season, so to come back even bigger and better this year is fantastic.”
Heading into the season Brook transformed his road going Toyota 86 into his 2018 racer, spending countless hours poring over the new car.
He was helped by David and Jason Cutts, the brothers behind the Jacer Formula Vee operation with whom Brook won his Formula Vee Australia crown, along with Mark McHenry and Joe Eh.
“Without those guys this wouldn’t be possible, those guys are the masterminds behind it all,” said Brook.
“All year we’ve had fantastic support both from the guys preparing the car and our sponsors, so a huge thank you for everything they’ve done. “Motor racing is a team sport, I’ve definitely not done this alone, so I’m so happy to have been able to play my part and repay all the effort and support I’ve been given over the past three years.”
Brook’s campaign got off to a solid start at Phillip Island where he set fastest lap in the first two races of the season. That encouraging start was followed by a dominant performance on the streets of Townsville, where he claimed pole position and all three wins across the weekend to leave Queensland with maximum points.
The weekend also marked Brook’s first win in Toyota 86 competition, and with the floodgates open he promptly won again at Sandown and Mount Panorama as the season progressed. It left Brook with the points advantage heading into the Newcastle weekend, where two podiums across the three races confirmed him as the 2018 Toyota 86 Racing Series champion.
It’s Brook’s second national level championship having won the 2014 Formula Vee Australia Series.
