Twenty-year-old Bryce Fullwood has completed his debut PIRTEK Enduro Cup campaign, after wrapping up his driving duties with the Bigmate Racing team on the Gold Coast.
The local racer originally from Darwin had never set foot on the circuit prior to the Gold Coast 600 event, in what were challenging conditions across the weekend.
Driving with Todd Hazelwood the pair finished 20th in the opening 300-kilometre race on Saturday, while storms on Sunday in the Surfers Paradise region saw Sunday’s race classed a non-event.
“Sunday had very tough conditions, we probably made 25 laps give or take of dry running … we were struggling a little bit for outright pace, but as soon as it started to rain I started catching the pack quite fast,” Fullwood said.
“Then it started getting very slippery and fairly diabolical in a few areas, so it was certainly keeping me on my guard, that’s for sure.
“Just as I was jumping out of the car it started bucketing down, so in a way I was kinda happy to hand the car back over to Todd, whilst the bulk of the rain happened while he was in the car … unfortunately for him he didn’t get a run and the race was cancelled.”
“For me this was a new track, first time here this weekend and I was one of the only people to have not raced here at this track before.
“It was a lot to take in, I only had 20-odd laps under my belt before I started the race on Saturday.”
Fullwood co-driving with Hazelwood finished the PIRTEK Enduro Cup in 21st, in what was also the team’s debut Supercars endurance series.
“I think we went good, I made a couple of mistakes at Sandown and Bathurst … all in all I think we did really well and I was happy with my pace in the car when compared to Todd,” Fullwood said.
“It was certainly a big learning curve for me being a long time in the car and the first time here in the Gold Coast—I did a double stint and two-thirds of the race here on Saturday.
“It was really good, I learnt a lot and certainly had fun.”
Fullwood will now prepare for the final round of the Dunlop Super2 Series on the streets of Newcastle.
“I’m feeling really good after Bathurst … whilst we didn’t get to show it in the race, we are starting to get some direction with the Super2 car,” Fullwood said.
“We’ve been struggling this year, but I think we’ve finally started to figure out how it likes to be tickled to find the speed out of it.
“We did really well last year coming second for the round to Todd, so hopefully we can go into the event with a strong package and hopefully stand on the podium again.”
The final round of the Dunlop Super2 Series takes place at the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 on 23-25 November.
