Twenty-year-old Bryce Fullwood has successfully competed in his first-ever Supercars race as part of the RABBLE.club Sandown 500.
The ‘Darwinite Kid’ drove the Bigmate Racing Commodore alongside Todd Hazelwood to finish an impressive 21st on debut, in what was also the team’s first Sandown event.
Fullwood was ecstatic after his first race in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, in what was a dream come true for the rising star.
“I think it went quite good, obviously for me I wasn’t quite sure on what to expect for the first time being in a Supercar for that long of a stint under that kind of intensity,” Fullwood said.
“I was really happy with how it all went, I made a really good start and made up four spots in the first couple of laps and I was able to hold most of them throughout my first stint.
“We improved the car a little bit throughout the day, it wasn’t too ‘crash-hot’ from the get-go, but with a bit of communication by the end of the race we had the car not too bad for Todd.”
“Very, very proud of everyone at Matt Stone Racing.”
While making his debut in the Supercars Championship, Fullwood was also racing in his regular Middy’s Electrical Commodore in the Dunlop Super2 Series and achieved one of his best results this season.
“It was a little bit hard getting time between changing suits and what-not, so it was very busy,” Fullwood said of his double duties at Sandown.
“Obviously both cars are still a little bit different, but the miles on the track definitely helped … I know now every bump and groove after doing so many laps.
“I think it benefitted in both cars.”
The next event for Fullwood will be the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, where he’ll compete in the Supercars 161-lap race around Mt Panorama and the 250-kilometre Super2 event.
“Before Bathurst I’ll be putting in more training and hopefully some simulator work with Todd and Wes [McDougall – Supercars engineer] and be the most prepared I can be for the event,” Fullwood added.
“We will go back and look at everything we’ve learned from this event and in the Super2 car as well to try and figure out how we can go into Bathurst on a bit of a better foot and make a great weekend out of it.”
Fullwood will be at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 on 4-7 October.
