FullGas Racing driver Dimitri Agathos has been involved in a crash during practice for Round 2 of the Australian Production Car Series at Queensland Raceway this morning.
Agathos, who was due to share the Nova Employment/Castrol/Whiteline/All Drive Subaroo/Hog’s Breath Café North Parramatta Subaru WRX STI with Matt Boylan for the weekend’s pair of 300km races, suffered brake failure on the back straight, and subsequently collided with the tyre wall at Turn 3.
While Agathos has been cleared of any injuries, the car has sustained severe damage and will take no further part in the race meeting.
“As I exited the pits, I tested the brakes and they felt fine. Because it was my out-lap, I wasn’t pushing at 100 per cent, and I braked about 100 metres earlier than my normal Turn 3 braking marker, but there were no brakes at all.
“I pumped the pedal but there was no response; once I was in the gravel trap, I tried to turn the car so the gravel would slow me down but it was still a heavy hit.
“The crash has bent the chassis rails and while we haven’t done a full assessment of the damage yet, it looks like it may need a re-shell which will make it an uphill battle for us to be back on track for the next round at Winton.
“It’s really disappointing for the whole crew, especially Matt Boylan who was really excited to race the car this weekend, but we’ll bounce back.”
