F1 EMILIA-ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX FRIDAY
Day 1 of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix has brought with it a mixture of joy, surprises and frustration.
The tifosi, Ferrari and Charles Leclerc ended the day more than pleased with the fastest time in FP2, as would the case for Oscar Piastri in second and Yuki Tsunoda in third.
Conversely, things didn’t go quite as well for their teammates.
Carlos Sainz was sixth, over a half second off the pace. Daniel Ricciardo was eleventh and sixth-tenths from Tsunoda’s best. It was a similar situation for Lando Norris in twelfth, 8/10ths behind Piastri.
Things didn’t go quite to plan for the Oracle Red Bull Racing Team either . Max Verstappen recorded fast times in sectors one and three, but found the second sector and the Acque Minerali a more difficult proposition.
At the end of the day Verstappen and teammate Sergio Perez sat in 7th and 8th, over a half-a-second off the pace of the front running Ferrari.
“It was a difficult day today,” Max Verstappen told Oracle Red Bull Racing Media.
“It was tricky to get a good balance and we were not really feeling comfortable within the car. It was moving around a lot and was very easy to lose the car at some points on the track. There are a few things we have to look at after today as our performance wasn’t as good as expected and we were not comfortable. We also struggled on the long runs, so there are definitely a few things to improve on if we are going to be competitive in qualifying.”
Doomsdayers will be out in force proclaiming the end of the Oracle Red Bull era on the back of a mass-exodus from the controversy stricken team. Then there will be inevitable attack on Daniel Ricciardo and another jibe about his job security at Visa Cash APP RB…
But we need to remember that this is a traditional Grand Prix weekend and there is still FP3 before the commencement of qualifying.
Miami showed the difference that just one day can make.
