WATERS RIDES A MONSTER WAVE TO VICTORY ON THE GOLD COAST

Whilst all eyes were focused on the fortunes of title protagonists, Brodie Kostecki and Shane van Gisbergen, it was Cameron Waters who stole the honours with pole position and a lights to flag victory.

It wasn’t an easy drive to the winner’s circle for the Monster Energy sponsored Tickford Racing driver, as Penrite Racing’s Matt Payne and Red Bull Ampol Racing star Shane van Gisbergen dovetailed an attack on the leader at either end of the 85 lap race.

Championship leader Brodie Kostecki had looked set to battle amongst the leaders, though a Kerb Strike penalty in the Top 10 shootout had dropped him from the front rows to tenth on the grid. Fellow Coca Cola Racing by Erebus driver Will Brown fared worse, when a gear selection drama had him last on the grid for the race. Broc Feeney fared only marginally better in the #88 Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro in 21st place.

Waters gained a three car advantage in the run to the opening corner as van Gisbergen dropped two positions to Mostert and Randle. It made for a four car Mustang freight train at the head of the field as Waters led from Payne, Randle and Mostert.

The Monster Mustang relinquished the race lead on Lap 28 as Waters headed to the pitlane for his first stop. Payne held sway at the had of the field for a solitary lap before van Gisbergen swooped on the run towards Turn 1 as Lap 32 began.

Both van Gisbergen and Kostecki made their first stops on Lap 31.

Waters regained the lead until his second pit stop on Lap 54, handing the lead back to van Gisbergen and Reynolds, with the latter back in the pits for his second stop on Lap 59.

The race came alive on Lap 75 as a charging van Gisbergen moved past second-placed David Reynolds. Waters sat a further 2.7 second further up the road, though the Red Bull Ampol Racing #97 was nibbling away at that advantage.

As the pair commenced the final lap of the race, that lead had literally vanished into thin air. Though try as he might, the #97 stayed glued to the rear bumper of the Grove Racing Mustang until the chequered flag fell.

Cameron Waters claimed a morale boosting win for the Tickford Racing team from van Gisbergen and Reynolds.

Randle, Kostecki, Pye, Heimgartner, Mostert, Payne and Courtney rounded out the top 10 at the chequered flag.
