WILL BROWN TO DEFEND TCR TITLE IN 2020 WITH HMO
HMO Customer Racing announced this evening that reigning TCR Series Champion Will Brown will return to the category to defend his title in 2020.
Brown, the 2016 Australian Formula 4 and Toyota 86 Series champion, had recently signed a long term agreement with Erebus Racing, which included a 2020 drive in the Dunlop Super 2 Series.
There was some concern that the deal may have precluded Brown from driving with Barry Morcom’s HMO team, however such concerns proved to be unfounded.
“The Erebus deal allows me to race TCR in 2020 and I am really looking forward to suiting up again with HMO,” Brown said. “I can’t wait to come back to try defend the title in 2020.”
Barry Morcom believes that Will Brown’s driving talent and TCR experience may well tip the balance in favour of the HMO Hyundai once again in 2020.
“Will did an amazing job in 2019,” Morcom said. “It was always our hope that we could retain him for 2020. The competition will be tough with a field brimming with quality, so it will be that much harder to do well. With Will in the car it means that we not only have the returning champion but an experienced TCR driver who completed more laps than any other competitor in 2019. If he wasn’t up the front, he showed great pace and excellent judgement to recover. That’s the sign of a truly talented driver and we’re thrilled to welcome him back.”
While Brown’s long term goal has always been in Supercars, his experiences behind the wheel of the Hyundai i30N TCR car and an end of season trip to the Hyundai TCR headquarters in Germany have given the 21year old from Toowoomba some other motorsport options to consider.
“My focus this year is to win the Dunlop Super 2 Series and the TCR Championship. I travelled with Barry to Germany at the end of 2019 to meet with Hyundai Motorsport and have discussed the possibility of competing in an International event at some stage of this year.”
Will Brown returns to the Dunlop Super 2 category at the Superloop 500 in Adelaide this weekend with a new team. The deal with Erebus has seen Brown move from Eggleston Motorsport to Image Racing. He will then travel back to Victoria for the TCR test day during the final week in February.
TCR racing will take on an international flavour with the first TCR Asia Pacific Cup during the Australian Formula One Grand Prix from 15 to 17 March. Will Brown then begins his title defence at the opening round of the 2020 CarSales TCR Series at Sydney Motorsport just two weeks later on the last weekend of March.
