The sign of a strong competitor and a good team is how they react to disappointment, and Sunday’s second position – and a credible 11th overall – in the ADAC GT Masters Junior Trophy did a lot to restore faith after a disastrous race on Saturday.

It’s fair to say in a championship as tough as the ADAC GT Masters, where every competitor is amongst the best in the GT3 world, that Aidan crossed an important threshold at Hockenheim this weekend with his strongest qualifying to date. With a time just 0.8s off the pole position and just 0.5 behind the factory driven – and fastest – AMG Mercedes equivalent.

His pace in the opening stint was also impressive, looking comfortable in the top half of the field and posting quick and consistent laps to hand the car over to teammate Marvin Dienst in P13 of the 30-car field.

With Dienst taking up the mantle, he made some good passes to bring the car home in P11, second in the Junior Trophy.

The result was much needed for the pairing to keep them in the championship hunt with one round to go at Sachsenring in two weeks’ time. They sit third in the championship, just 5.5 points behind Max Hoffer and 16.5 behind title leader Ricardo Feller.

“That was a bit off a rollercoaster weekend,” said Aidan. “In the end I came away happy as I have ever been in this series. I think I made a step in my driving – and also in using the tyres to the maximum. It’s partly due to me gaining more experience round by round but also from having had the opportunity to test here at Hockenheimring pre-season.

“We’ll put race one down to experience and look at the positives from the second one and we take the battle to the season finale. The aim there is a strong result in the Junior Trophy which realistically we could already have been leading were it not for the race one penalties.”
