HALF PRICE PARTS Velocity Magazine Media driver, 14-year old Kyle Evans combined speed and a level head beyond his years to steer his Hyundai Excel onto the podium in the second round of the Queensland CAMS State Championships at Morgan Park Raceway on Sunday 30 June 2019.
Saturday saw Evans emerge from the 20 minute qualifying session with 6th place out of a 23 car field, though there was more to come for the rookie teenager in race one.
Kyle found himself surrounded by some heavy hitters in the Excel category as he sat on the third row of the grid for the race start as Cameron Wilson, David Wood, Tyrone Gautier, Brock Giblin, Seiton Connor Young, Cameron Bartholomew and Supercars Super3 & Toyota 86 racer Broc Feeney surrounded the youngster. Kyle took on the challenge and gained two places during the course of the eight lap event and finished 4th overall. Just Wilson, Woods and Bartholomew ahead.
The second Saturday race was a slightly longer ten lap journey and Kyle again moved forward to snare his first podium, 3rd place behind Wilson and Bartholomew.
Following on from his excellent results on Saturday, Evans looked to consolidate Sunday on a high. Kyle dropped one place from his starting position to Bartholomew and maintained 4th place to the chequered flag.
Evans was on the cusp of a podium position for the round as he prepared for the final race of the weekend. He maintained contact with the top 3 as the race got underway and not overwhelmed by his place at the pointy end of the field. He battled Wilson, Gautier and Bartholomew for the win and made a decisive pass on the later at Gumtree Corner to claim second place behind Cameron Wilson.
Kyle’s consistency and position in the top portion of the field throughout the weekend was rewarded with an excellent 3rd overall for the round behind Wilson and Bartholomew. Kyle Evans had every reason to be pleased with his performance across the weekend and in his rise through the Hyundai Excel ranks.
Kyle Evans thanks his sponsors EzyStone Benchtops, TPS Suspension and Velocity Motorsports Magazine for their support. A special mention also to Robbo and Chris from Norwell Motorplex for their one-on-one training and to Lee-Anne Maker-Evans, Troy Perrins, Nick Ashwin and Glenn Bartholomew.
The youngsters next CAMS event will be “Shannons – Round 3” at Qld Raceway on 3 & 4 August 2019. Velocity will be at this race meeting so we will more from Kyles racing at this event.
