CALAN WILLIAMS SUNDAY RACE DAY IN HOCKENHEIM

PRESS RELEASE/Calan Williams Racing – Photo: supplied

Once again perfect conditions in Hockenheim with it being fine and warm.

Qualifying started well on the first set of tyres with my first runs pushing me up inside the top ten. My lap times continued to improve, and the timing of completing my final flying lap saw me the last to come in to change to my second set.

This was fine as there was plenty of time to change and get back out to get my second run in. Whilst making a slight change to the car however, the engine cover refused to be re-fitted, and whilst that was resolved I had to spend longer than intended in the pits before resuming. The result was that I was 1 or 2 laps shy of getting my quickest lap in when the track was at its best and I ended up qualifying P15.

In the race I got away from the line well and made up a position straight away. In the early corners I needed to fight and hold my lines and I managed to make up another. Then coming down the straight into turn 6 I was able to take 2 places through the middle of two drivers and then avoided an incident in front of me on the exit.

Through all of this I had managed to move up to 7th in the space of the first lap and continued to push as hard as I could.

Mid Race my tyres started to fall away, and it very much became a case of hanging on. Unfortunately I was not able to defend two places, however maintained 9th in the end amongst tight racing fighting for 8th and defending behind over the last 5 laps.

Overall very pleased to once again start the race well and gain so many positions during the race, especially through the frantic early laps. I know I have made big improvements in this area and now we need to put everything together as a team in qualifying to start further up the grid where we should be.

Thank you to Mick, Daniel and all the team at Fortec for all of their work over the weekend
