Trackhouse Racing visits Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday hoping to repeat its recent success on the 1.54-mile drafting track.
In the most recent 10 races (since the fall of 2023), Ross Chastain and Daniel Suárez have combined for a win, three second-place, six top-10 finishes and led 68 laps.
The highlight came in March last year when Suárez notched his second-career NASCAR Cup Series victory in the closest three-wide finish in NASCAR history.
Shane van Gisbergen joins the team in 2025 as a full-time driver and hopes to add to those numbers.Trackhouse arrives in Atlanta hoping to rebound after accidents marred each of their races in the Daytona 500.
SVG NOTES
- Rookie Year: Shane van Gisbergen is a Sunoco Rookie of the Year Contender during the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season. In 2024, Van Gisbergen competed for the Rookie of the Year honors during his full-time Xfinity Series season.
- Familiar with Atlanta: Although this is Van Gisbergen’s first full-time season in the Cup Series, he arrives in Atlanta with one Cup Series start on the 1.54-mile oval track. In September, Van Gisbergen piloted the No. 16 Chevrolet to a 32nd place finish after battling some car issues that kept him in the back of the field.
- Daytona 500 Debut: Van Gisbergen finished 33rd in ‘The Great American Race’ after he was collected in a 11-car accident on lap 72 at the beginning of Stage 2. The No. 88 team worked to repair the WeatherTech Chevrolet from the pits and ultimately finished the race several laps down.
- Aboard the No. 88: This weekend in Atlanta, the No. 88 Chevrolet will carry the iconic red and white WeatherTech colors for 400 miles. The Bolingbrook, Ill., company founded by CEO David MacNeil will be a primary sponsor on Van Gisbergen’s Chevrolet for 19 races in 2025.
- Crew Chief: Stephen Doran begins his first season as Van Gisbergen’s crew chief on the No. 88 Chevrolet and his second year as a crew chief at the Cup level.
- Daytona in January: Van Gisbergen competed in his sixth Rolex 24 Hour Race at Daytona International Speedway in January. The No. 91 WeatherTech Chevrolet Corvette fielded by Trackhouse by TF Sport had an all-star line-up: Trackhouse teammate Connor Zilisch, INDYCAR Driver Scotty McLaughlin, two-time world champion bronze driver Ben Keating and Van Gisbergen.
Atlanta Motor Speedway is another drafting track like Daytona. How have you been able to learn drafting and what is it like to you?
“You can’t practice that in the simulator (laughs). It’s odd, you do qualifying one lap by yourself and it’s boring, you’re driving around with one hand blocking the air and all that, but when you’re in a pack, you’re doing four or five seconds a lap quicker. It’s unbelievable! Last year in my (Cup) races on drafting tracks, I had two yellow stripes on the back of my bumper, so people were ignoring me, so glad I don’t have that on my Chevrolet this year. But it’s (drafting) cool, once you learn and build a little bit of trust, people get confident around you. It’s a different way of racing.”
Your NASCAR career has accelerated really quickly over the last two years from winning the inaugural Chicago Street Race to now racing full-time in the Cup Series. Were you ready for all of this?
“It was always the plan. I am really glad I didn’t jump straight into Cup last year. It was a great transition year, learning Xfinity and then coming to Cup. I think I would have got eaten alive if I had jumped straight in (to Cup). I feel ready for it this year! The cars are very, very different so it will be a learning year again. Halfway through the year, I want to be pushing forward, especially on the ovals, and try to be towards the front.”
