TEAM 18 BATTLE HOME IN RACE 9 IN PERTH

DEWALT Racing’s Mark Winterbottom and TRADIE Beer Racing’s David Reynolds salvaged 16th and 17th in what was a challenging first race of the Perth SuperSprint.

The day started off strong with both cars featuring in the top ten in practice. 

An aggressive attack on qualifying didn’t pay dividends for Winterbottom and Reynolds, as Winterbottom failed to advance out of Part 1 and was stranded in 23rd. Reynolds progressed through to Part 2 and had pace to challenge the top ten, but would only start 19th.

The race was a battle from the outset, as both drivers struggled for balance throughout, ultimately crossing the line together in 16th and 17th.

The team will regroup overnight and take away the learnings and data from today’s action and apply moving forwards tomorrow.

“Really tough day, but not through lack of effort. We’re trying hard and the smallest changes on the car are doing big things and it’s all making sense, but we’re just not nailing the pace, but our pit stops were good, race was clean but that was kind of our pace. I ran around with Davey pretty well for a lot of the race. 

“We’ve got a bit of work to do, tomorrow is a new day with another practice and qualifying so hopefully we go home happy Sunday night.”

Practice 2: 10th
Qualifying: 19th
Race 9: 17th

“It was a day of kind of what it could have been. If I didn’t stuff it up in qualifying, I reckon we would have had a much better day. 

“I made a mistake in qualifying, buried us down to 19th when I think my car should have been in the top 10. That strategy was high risk but high reward and it just didn’t come off for us, but I think that at the end of the day it really came down to the process we had in place and it didn’t match the time. There was a few things that led to that, but all in all, it come down to me in that last corner and maybe sprayed it a little bit. I’m not sure whether that would have got us through to the last qualifying session, but it would have been very close 

“In the race, we just didn’t have much pace from start to finish. We had a lot of understeer in the car which chewed up the fronts then chewed up the rears so I’ve struggled a lot but hopefully we can get a good direction overnight. 

“We’re going to sit down and go through the data and everything. It didn’t look like myself or Mark had any pace, so it’s just one of those days nothing went our way.”
