MAX VERSTAPPEN EARNED THE IRE OF AUSSIE F1 RACE DIRECTOR
Max Verstappen earned the ire of Aussie F1 Race Director for his finish line burnout at the Styrian Grand Prix. The Australian has placed Verstappen and the Formula 1 grid on notice that a repeat event would not be tolerated.
“It was not an ideal situation,” said Michael Masi to F1.com, “which is why I spoke to the team immediately and told them accordingly, that it’s something that would not be tolerated in the future.”
Article 43.3 of F1’s sporting regulations allow for a degree of post-race celebrations for drivers, under the condition that such a celebration ‘is performed safely and does not endanger other drivers or officials.’
It may well be that performing a post race burnout, as we regularly see with MotoGP and our own Repco Supercars Championship (COVID allowing), is not the issue at hand. It is not uncommon for team members to hang for the pit straight debris fencing and lean out over the circuit as their driver approaches the chequered flag, which is not the norm throughout the race. The addition of a driver burnout at that same point in time may be the factor to which Masi has referred. Mind you, there are races where there simply isn’t enough rubber left to shed in a post race burnout.
We wait with interest to see what happens at the Red Bull Ring this weekend.
The Austrain Grand Prix gets underway again this Friday at the Red Bull Ring, keep an eye on Velocity Magazine for our nightly updates.
