The day commenced with an early track walk with Greg Fahey a respected and experienced Formula Ford coach, mentor and instructor who has coached many drivers who are now professional race car drivers.  Greg and I had an in-depth discussion while walking Lakeside Park.

By walking the track and seating down in various positions on the track to see what it looks like from the perspective in a Formula Ford. The track is filled with blind corners and track sections which means that you rely heavily on track markers to hit all the right spots to make it around the track.

Lakeside Park appears to be a simple track on paper however, when driving the track, you can see that in this short lap it consists of a tight, fast flowing layout with steep elevation changes that the track is built on.  Lakeside Park has filled with blind corners, limited run off leaving no room for error. Lakeside is well used with a bit of wear and tear. The lap is a marginally longer than a go kart track at 2.441km with a total of 8 turns in less than a minute.

The Formula Ford is a purpose-built race car and does not focusing on the driver’s comfit.  Making the bumps in the track fell a lot worse in a Formula Ford due to the hard suspension and not many dampers like power steering, taking away less feel from the driver. The bumps are unsettling which adds to the track difficulty. Lakeside Park is an iconic race track located at Kurwongbah in the North suburbs of Brisbane Queensland.

At the moment I feel grateful to finally drive on a race track after such a long wait.  I felt the practice day was beneficial to iron out the bugs in the car and driver.

Great to finally get back on track at Lakeside Park for the upcoming round at Morgan Park Raceway at the end of August.
