INDYCAR CHAMPIONS MEET FURRY LOCALS BEFORE BATHURST

Two US IndyCar Champions aiming to tackle Mount Panorama for the first time, have this morning met Koalas and Kangaroos in Sydney before their maiden trip to the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

James Hinchcliffe and Alexander Rossi met with Australian local animals at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo in Darling Harbour in Sydney just minutes before beginning the trek across the Blue Mountains to check out Bathurst.

Rossi’s Virgin Australia Supercars Championship debut this weekend sees him become the third Indianapolis 500 winner to start the Bathurst 1000, joining Johnny Rutherford and Aussie Will Power.

The US-based drivers were this morning joined by their Walkinshaw Andretti United teammates, Scott Pye and Warren Luff, who have finished second at the Bathurst 1000 two years in a row, bridesmaids in both 2017 and 2018.

Meanwhile on top of Mount Panorama, two-time Bathurst 1000 Champion Rick Kelly unveiled his Nissan Altima for the weekend, that will sport the iconic “Silver Bullet” livery made famous by another two-time Champion of the Great Race, Russell Ingall.

Ingall joined Kelly for the unveiling in front of hundreds of fans who have already set-up camping sites at the mountain.

This year is the 59th running of the event now known as the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. First held at Bathurst in 1963 as the Armstrong 500, ‘The Great Race’ has featured at Mount Panorama ever since.

Drivers will celebrate with thousands of fans tomorrow in Bathurst’s CBD with the annual drivers’ parade before it all begins with practice on Thursday.

Sunday’s 161-lap 1000km race around Mount Panorama, the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 will begin on Sunday morning at the new time of 11:30am AEST.

The race will be broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports 506 HD, Kayo, TEN and WIN across Australia.
