Cameron Hill has equaled his personal-best Carrera Cup results at the Australian Grand Prix today, with fourth in qualifying and Race 1.

In a tense qualifying session, Hill vaulted from ninth on the leader-board to fourth on the very last lap of the session, after a gamble to delay changing to his second set of tyres.

“We pitted one lap later than most other drivers for fresh tyres, and it was a risk that paid off,” Hill said.

“My pit crew were under a lot of pressure to execute the tyre change quickly, and get me back onto the track in time for me to set another lap, but they did the job.

“I also had to ensure the tyres were warmed up enough on my out-lap, but then I had the benefit of good tyres when the track was at its best.”

In the race, Hill moved up to third when he overtook Michael Almond on the opening lap, but a small error a couple of laps later saw him slip to fourth.

“Unfortunately, I clipped a tyre bundle which dislodged the front splitter, and caused me to understeer off the track at the next corner due to the reduced downforce,” Hill said.

“I lost a spot, but even with the damage the car was still very fast and I was able to keep up with the top three.”

Hill said today’s result has given him a lot of confidence for the weekend ahead.

“The car is in the window, and it’s well and truly fast enough to fight at the very front of the field – I’m starting in a good position again tomorrow, and look forward to some more good battles,” he concluded.

Race 2 will be held at 2:55 this afternoon.
