It’s time to go Racing  – Exciting times ahead for Karters at Wollongong Kart Raceway

Round 1 – This Saturday Feb 23 – It’s taken some time but Finally the track is ours for us kart racers, and new website – you can now enter online

A lot has been happening behind the scenes at AKRA Headquarters in the last 6 months of 2018.

We got the keys to the track on Dec 28 2018 and in a mad rush and in only 1 week to open day Jan 5th,  a heap of volunteers helped clean up the track. Excavation trucks from COLMAC fixed the entrance road into track, fixed the gravel traps at turns 1, 5 and 6 then brought in a water truck to washed the track surface.

The grass was higher than the tyres in some areas and in poor state and now looks pristine thanks to Mower John and Cuz Stephen who both cut the equivalent of dozen’s of track laps in the ride on mowers.

Multiple visits to the tip was required with Mechanic John’s trailer as so much shit was left on the property.

DPE’s Dazza went and picked up our new Fleet of Hire Karts with the Nice DPE Transporter – no one tell Bart – he doesn’t know we used his truck.

Mechanic John was now all excited he had some new toys to play with that he managed to tell all of the Illawarra area how COOL the Wollongong Kart Track was that he even got us Free TV coverage, what a Champion TV Star.

The Clubhouse and Clubhouse Kitchen was, “lets just say – not fit for dogs”, but now is a Clubhouse to be proud of. All clean, windows you can see out of and looking fresh thanks to Sue & Vonny Cleaning Services,  and some nice Racing picture frames installed by Old Man Handyman.

Deano took out his frustrations of not having a car license for 3 months on our workshop area and ripped out all the ugly panels and tossed out all the rubbish that was left inside. Old Man Handyman followed by spraying everything even the old kitchen sink WHITE  which brighten up the workshop and made look so much bigger and a week later the Deano/Old Man team washed and painted the concrete floor with paving paint……………. Looks fantastic and a nice place to work on karts now ………… We had to send Vonny on an expedition to Tasmania to find Rolly and bring him back so he could put his final organising touches to the workshop and bring along some needed tools for the Ambrose Junior Mechanic’s University Team.

Playing – and let’s be Honest here – this is all just play – no serious “Im going to be the next Mark Winterbottom, James Courtney, Michael Caruso or (enter V8 star driver here) Daniel Ricciardo, Mark Webber, we are in the game to play and have fun with the toys/karts we have.

Just incase you didn’t know – many of those V8 drivers started their Karting careers racing at the Wollongong Kart Track.

I remember watching Winterbottom Racing a Saturday night Pro Clubman Series back in the late 1990’s and the Pro Clubman was top notch racing in the days of past.

Just check out this video of Wollongong Kart Track before the track extension:

The Clubman racing was unbelievably good.  LOOK at the crowd and the parked cars ALL AROUND the track – it’s insanely good . And the racing so close – just top stuff
