Bigmate Racing have made their Virgin Australia Supercars Championship Townsville debut today at the Reid Park circuit, with Todd Hazelwood completing practice laps in the Falcon.

At the completion of today’s practice, Hazelwood finished 23rd in both sessions.

Despite the result, the 22-year-old was optimistic about the car’s potential speed, especially earlier in both of the practice runs.

“It was a case of three steps forward and one step back today, although some very promising signs for the team at Bigmate Racing,” Hazelwood said.

“Our pace on an used tyre was very promising and we were consistently in the top 15 in both sessions before everyone else put better rubber on.

“All of the changes we made today were all in the right direction, which makes my job behind the wheel much more rewarding and enjoyable.

“Unfortunately we had a little issue with our brakes that caused us to not post a fast lap on the green tyre … tonight we will analyse all the data and hopefully make all the right changes before qualifying tomorrow.

“It’s the first time all season where all of the changes are making sense and we are honestly making very good progress.”

The Watpac Townsville 400 will host qualifying and Race 17 of the Championship tomorrow.
