Kody Garland has taken the lead of the Aussie Racing Cars Series after the second round of the season at Symmons Plains Raceway, in the Motor Traders’ Association of New South Wales Ford Mustang.
Entering the weekend Garland was second in the points, having earned a race win and two runner-up finishes at the season’s opening event in March.
The ultra-consistent start to the year continued in Tasmania, where Garland qualified second fastest. The opening race of the weekend set the tone for what was a highly competitive affair, with Garland engaged in an ever-changing battle for the lead. After a three-wide battle on the final lap, Garland crossed the line second while also claiming the new race lap record.
After setting up for a late charge in Race 2, a Safety Car in the dying minutes scuppered Garland’s chances of victory and settled another runner-up result. The top 12 were inverted on the grid for Race 3, but that did little to slow Garland down who quickly carved his way through the field amid light rainfall to take the lead and run away for his second win of the season.
Garland led for almost the entirety of the final race, despite running with a straight line deficit to some of the chasing pack, only missing out on the victory by 0.0194s after a drag race to the line.
Finishing second for the round, the result leapfrogs Garland in to the lead of the series having finished no lower than second across the first seven races of the season.
Round three of the Aussie Racing Cars Series takes place as part of the Perth Super440 on the Supercars undercard.

“We were chasing a round win, and to miss out by such a small margin obviously hurts a bit, but at the end of the day we got some really good points and as we learnt last year that’s going to be decisive come the final round.
“Our biggest challenge this weekend was horsepower, a small rule change left us down a bit to those around us which basically means you’re fighting with one hand behind your back around Symmons Plains. I had to drive the car at twelve tenths every single lap, thankfully the Triple Eight chassis was a beauty.
“While I want to win every race, in all honesty I had the most fun in those two ultra-close finishes even if we were on the wrong side of it. That’s the racing I come to be a part of, which makes this category so fun, and I’m all for it.
“We’ll get our engine in shape for the next round, we were strong in Perth last year, and hopefully try to build a bit of a buffer in the points.
