Off the back of two runner-up positions in the Asian Le Mans Series, Aidan Read is very much in championship contention heading to the final two rounds of the championship starting with Sepang, Malaysia this coming weekend (14-15 February) followed by Buriram, Thailand.
It’s been a strong campaign so far for Aidan, starting both the China and Australia rounds with double stints in the #36 Eurasia Motorsport Ligier JS P217. Together with teammates Nick Foster and Roberto Merhi, the trio have secured one pole position and the two-second positions, while Aidan also recorded a new lap record at The Bend in Australia.
With 37 points on the board from the two rounds, 13 shy of the series leader, Aidan heads to Sepang confident that he and his team can challenge for victory. The Malaysian circuit is very much a ‘home’ venue for Aidan who spent much of his formative years competing at the circuit with multiple wins in Formula Masters followed by a sensation LMP2 victory on his class debut.
Aidan has spent the short breaks between rounds preparing for his 2020 campaign, testing GT equipment in Europe and training hard for the final two races of the Asian Le Mans Series.
“We are well prepared for Sepang and in a good position to challenge for the title coming into the big double header,” Aidan said. “Second place finishes so far have been tidy, we are in the fight for points. Now it is coming down to Sepang and Buriram with 52 points available, so it is important we keep performing well, with the pace of previous rounds, to be in the mix for the wins on race day.
“I’m really looking forward to racing into the night at Sepang,” he continued. “I know from our test last year that it is great fun to drive these cars at night. Both Shanghai and The Bend were strong races for me, and with my experience and history of wins at Sepang and Buriram I am confident I can keep performing at that level.”
The crucial 11 days of the championship get underway Thursday 13 February and conclude with the chequered flag at Chang International Circuit on Sunday 23 February.
