Stephen Grove says momentum will be the key to success as he prepares to tackle Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom for Round 4 of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup (July 12-14, 2019).
The popular English circuit, located near Towcester, hosts the latest round of the pinnacle of Porsche one-make racing in support of the British Grand Prix.
Silverstone is a highly demanding race track with sweeping, fast sections and some of the most famous corners in motorsport incorporated into its 18 turn, 5.8km length.
It demands precision and speed, through sections like Copse corner, Abbey as well as Maggots and Becketts where drivers are tested to their limits.
While the last round of Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup took place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, only a few weeks prior Grove took part in a two-day in-season series test at Silverstone.
There he completed in the range of 100 laps around the Formula 1 venue in preparation for the British Grand Prix round this weekend.
He also arrives off the back of his best result this season last time out in Spielberg where he claimed a third-place finish in Pro-Am at the Austrian circuit.
Coupled with the precious mileage and knowledge gained at the test, Grove heads into Round 4 confident he can have success.
“We had a really, really good test at Silverstone. I feel really confident there; I really enjoy the track, I like the layout — for me, it’s a bit of Albert Park circuit and Phillip Island mixed together,” said Grove.
“You’ve got to use a lot of kerb and carry a lot of corner speed. We weren’t that far off on pace at the test so that’s quite positive heading into this weekend.
“The two-day test was enormous to get that valuable time in the car and on the circuit.
“It took me a day to properly learn the track; it’s a very technical track and a very hard track to be quick on because you’ve got to carry momentum around the whole circuit.
“There’s not a lot of big stops and tight turns, it’s free-flowing, so one tiny mistake and your lap is done.
“I’m a really looking forward to Silverstone and I think we can make some solid progress and hopefully take it to the two top Pro-Am guys.
“For me as a driver, it’s taken me a couple of rounds to get out of the mindset of braking with ABS, because there is no ABS in Supercup.
“When I race in Carrera Cup in Australia, they use ABS there so it’s a big thing adapting to braking without ABS in Supercup; you don’t have the luxury of being able to pull the car up at the last moment because you will lock up and probably fire off the road.
“So that’s out of my system now; I’ve been working super hard all year and at the test days to re-invent my braking and go back to the way I used to brake without ABS and I’m there now.”
The weekend’s action begins with 45-minutes of Free Practice on Friday, followed by a 30-minute qualifying session on Saturday and the 13-lap Race on Sunday.
Fox Sports Channel 506 will broadcast Qualifying and the Race Live in Australia, with Qualifying taking place on Sunday at 02:13 AEST and the Race at 20:10 AEST on Sunday.
